Abstract Acrylics:

The Expressive Canvas

Peter DamaBFA, MFA

Unleash your creative energy through the vibrant world of abstract acrylics! This dynamic 8-week studio course provides the technical skills and conceptual frame-work to create expressive, non-representational art. You’ll master essential acrylic techniques, from smooth washes and transparent glazing to heavy impasto and texture building—while exploring the core elements of abstract composition, color theory, and design. Learn to move beyond the literal, discover your unique mark-making style, and transform emotions, music, or observations into compelling, layered abstract paintings. All skill levels are welcome to start their journey toward a bold and personal artistic voice.

Course Objectives:

*Master fundamental acrylic handling, including mixing, layering, and incorporating mediums.

*Develop a strong understanding of color relationships, value, and how to use them for emotional impact.

*Confidently apply the principles of design (rhythm, balance, focal point) to non-objective work.

*Experiment with mixed media, collage, and subtractive techniques to create rich surfaces.

*Cultivate a personal abstract style through process-based painting and critical self-evaluation.

Required Materials:  12”x12” stretched canvas, Basic Sets of acrylic paints, and bristle brushes, 2 plastic plates as palettes, 2-pint water Solo cups.
